Mr. Hill has been a volunteer at Bworks for six years, helping teach the Earn A Bike program and supporting the program with his knowledge and time. His volunteering helped us grow the Earn a Bike program each season and over the years we have watched him grow his mechanical ability into a teaching ability. For the last couple years He has been studying at UMSL to complete his teaching certificate.

Mr. Hill has accepted the position of Program Lead, he will be leading our efforts to offer our programs to even more students through extended programing hours and off site programming in 2012.

Congratulations to Tom!

Our Earn-A-Bike, Earn-A-Computer and Book Works programs provide kids the incentive and opportunity to develop their academic, vocational, and social skills. We’re always looking for more instructors, and there’s no need for you to be a bike mechanic, techie or author! By committing to volunteer a few hours a week and sharing your knowledge, you can help kids learn the importance of responsibility, respect, communication, problem solving, critical thinking and community awareness.

Join us for Instructor Orientation at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 29th to learn more about our programs, see our new building in Soulard, and meet other instructors. It’s the perfect time to get involved!

Book Works is back in my living room, due to superior heating. It will move hopefully for the last time in June or July, when all of BWorks moves into its new/future building in the Soulard neighborhood, but for now it’s still in Shaw, a couple of blocks from the current BWorks building.

Keshon is almost finished with his first book, The Milkman, and a [relatively] new student, Hannah, is contributing pages to The Chinese Horoscope Coloring Book. Someday more pictures will be posted.

We have at this point more editors than writers. I suppose when you are trying to maintain a one-to-one ratio, you will constantly need one or the other. I’d like more of both, really, but right now: WRITERS.
Also note: Because of the one-to-one ratio, we can take writers of any skill level. Including writers who cannot read or write. We can train them. But all writers [and editors] must be toilet trained.

Book Works has produced its first book, “The Shy Girl”, by Jordan Hamilton. Fifteen illustrated color pages of social intrigue, from the playground of Sherman Elementary to points beyond.

There will be a book signing at Dunaway Books on Saturday, September 25th, 2p.m. It’s on 3111 South Grand, a couple of doors below Arsenal. You can buy a book! For not much. And meet the author. And he will sign it. Proceeds go to BWorks.

He’s almost done with another one, “Johnny’s First Day at School” and you might be able to get that too.

Book Works moved into my living room for the summer, due to superior air conditioning. It’s worked out pretty nicely, as we only have three kids at the moment.

We’re about to publish “The Shy Girl”, by Jordan, our first book. Keaon is writing and illustrating a coloring book on the Chinese Animal Horoscope, and Keshon is writing about his brother’s garden.

We would like to expand to Thursdays, but need tutors.
